Pool Robot Not Climbing Walls? A Checklist

Pool robot won't climb the wall? Check model, cleaning mode, filter, trapped air, wall film and worn brushes, in that order, before you accept a return.

Y50S cleaning underwater with debris lifting off the floor
"It won't climb the wall" reaches every pool robot seller sooner or later. Some of those robots have a real fault. Plenty don't: they're in the wrong mode, the filter is full, or the wall is too slippery to grip. A support team that asks the right questions in the right order saves returns, and a buyer who knows those questions can test for them before ordering. This is the order we'd use.

Is it a wall-climbing model?

Start here, because no fix will make a floor-only robot climb. Our Y10, Y20, C1, C2, C3 and C5 are rated for the pool floor only, and their sheets say so. The Y50S and Y50 clean floor, walls and waterline. If a floor-only robot was sold as one that climbs, the problem sits in the listing or the sales pitch, and that's where to fix it.

Which cleaning mode is it in?

Wall-climbing robots usually let the owner choose what to clean. Our Y50S and Y50 both have 4 cleaning modes, and the Y50's are floor, full coverage, wall and waterline. A robot left in floor mode stays on the floor, which looks exactly like a robot that can't climb. Both models have app control, so the first support question is simple: which mode does the app show? Make sure the manual explains the modes in your customers' language. That page answers the complaint before anyone writes it.

It climbs halfway and slides back down

That's usually flow. A wall-climbing robot relies on the water its pump moves to hold it against the wall, and a full basket or a mesh coated in fine sand or pollen cuts that flow. The Y50S is rated at 75 GPM and the Y50 at 85 GPM, each with a 4 L basket, and flow falls as any filter clogs, whatever the rating. Ask the owner to empty and rinse the basket and try again before anything else.
Trapped air is the other suspect. Many manuals tell owners to hold the robot underwater and tilt it until the bubbles stop before letting go. Air left inside can make a robot float at one end or tip away from the wall.

Is the wall too slippery?

Brushes and tracks need something to grip. An algae film or slimy biofilm on the walls, which builds up when the water chemistry drifts, can make a good robot slide, and the robot gets blamed for the green wall it can't climb. Ask owners to brush the walls and rebalance the water, then try again. Watch the waterline too. Some robots are designed to stop a little below the surface so the pump doesn't draw in air, so ask your supplier how their model behaves at the waterline and describe it in your support script as normal behavior.

Are the brushes and tracks worn?

After a season or more of use, this becomes a likely cause. Brushes and tracks are wear parts, and worn ones lose grip on the wall first. Compare the owner's brush with a new one: flattened bristles or smooth treads give it away. Brushes and tracks can be ordered separately, along with filters, chargers and batteries, so a spare set in your warehouse turns this into a parts shipment instead of a returned robot. Our warranty covers the whole unit for 1 year.

What should we check in samples?

Test climbing the way owners will see it, with a dirty filter. Run a full cycle in a pool with real debris and keep watching as the basket fills, because the later climbs tell you more than the first. Test on the wall surface your market uses, whether that's tile, plaster or liner. Switch modes in the app and confirm the robot changes what it cleans. Then record a short video of the sample climbing and reaching the waterline. Your support team can send it to owners as a reference for normal behavior.
